Great is Thy Faithfulness
Great is Thy Faithfulness
"Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see; all I have needed Thy hand hath provided- Great is Thy faithfulness."
This hymn has been replaying in my mind all week. Growing up, throughout middle school I struggled with depression and everything that corresponded with just being a middle schooler (I’m sure we can all relate). One of the most influential people in my life was my principle. She is so wise and has an incredible heart for the Lord- truly a faithful servant. I remember standing in the auditorium after receiving news of her cancer and everyone breaking into song singing, Great is Thy Faithfulness per her request. This past week I received word again that the time is coming and at the rate things are progressing she may not be with us much longer, but still I hear the words, Great is Thy Faithfulness.
"His faithfulness is a shield and buckler." Psalm 91:4b
What an incredible woman she is and a remarkable example she has been during the middle school years of my life and even now as she prepares to see our Savior. When I reminisce upon singing the song, and hear it today as I type I think of her example and life of service to our God and its impact to me, it all fades into the shadows and exemplifies the light of his greatness. I don’t sit here and sing this song because of anything she ever did, anything I did, or anything anyone did. I can sit here and sing this song because of what Jesus did on the cross; the perfect example of faithfulness.
"Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful." Hebrews 10:19-23
The Scriptures have themed all throughout them stories of God’s faithfulness always to sinners like us. The truth and ever present reality of this attribute, of me and my principle’s Savior, is the reason I can sit down and ponder the lyrics to a hymn or sing with a congregation of people in light ofpossibly losing one of the greatest examples in my life. I know that God is faithful and will keep His promises. God has promised us life with Him if we put our faith in Jesus’ death and resurrection, and I know she has done so. If the Lord chooses for her to die then he is faithful and she will spend eternity in the presence of Him, and if not soon then one day eventually all who believe will as well. What an incredible gift is that and because of this I will continue to sing with many others, Great is Thy Faithfulness Lord.
